Community Assets Fund
The Community Assets Fund
The primary purpose of the fund is to increase access to and use of existing community facilities and public spaces in the Big Local area by Big Local residents. Organisations were invited to apply for grants for projects that would help to address the Fund’s objective:
To increase and develop the use of existing community assets, including physical assets such as buildings and open spaces; and develop community-led solutions to community-wide challenges, including:
- Digital inclusion
- Financial inclusion
- Education, training and enterprise
- Tackling gangs, crime and anti-social behaviour
- Coordination of local services and provision
We awarded two grants of up to £20,000 in 2015. Grants could be spent on capital projects or service provision that would open up assets to the community however we only received applications for service delivery.
One of the grants awarded developed a physical space on a temporary basis; however the change was not permanent. We were surprised not to have received any applications to develop community facilities in the area, particularly because capital funding is rare.
In phase 2 of Big Local North Brixton we will be looking at improving community assets through a different approach.
32. The Baytree Centre
To provide 60 places on the PEACH mentoring programme to mothers and daughters who are residents of the Big Local North Brixton area.
33. Clapham Film Unit
To deliver an art and filmmaking project to young residents of the Stockwell Park Estate, using street art to decorate ‘The Pen’, a basketball court and world-famous graffiti destination.
